"THE BEST WAY TO FIND YOURSELF IS TO LOSE YOURSELF IN THE SERVICE OF OTHERS." -MAHATMA GHANDI
Mentoring
I don't see it as mentoring but rather just helping others and answering their questions using my experience. Regardless, I feel priviledged to have the opportunity to guide the future leaders in our industry. Whether it's younger team members at work, ASCE's mentor match, undergraduates through professional organization outreach with or k-12 students at the Future Cities competition; I enjoy helping others in any way I can. I believe knowledge is useless unless it is passed on and if I can help just one young engineer with my lessons learned, it is worth it. |
Professional Organizations
I have been a member of ASCE since 2013, ITE since 2017, ASHE since 2018 and YPT since 2020. I serve on the boards for most of these organizations and enjoy volunteering my time to help brainstorm interesting and engadging professional development events as well as networking opportunites for like minded young professionals and students. Networking is crucial in the A|E|C industry and the earlier you get involved the more you can get out of it. I believe professional organizations provide a tremendous learning opportunity for students and young professionals alike, that may not be available at their work. As part of these boards, I assist with planning such events for a combined membership of 2,350 people with a combined budget of $15,000. |
Community
Giving back to my community has always been part of my journey. When I was in high school I volunteered as a dog walker for my local SPCA and walked dogs every summer for 4 years. In college I volunteered all four years with the Big Event as well as the Council for International Student Organiations where we organized the annual International Street Fair. Now in my professional career, I have been part of the office volunteer or outreach commitee at both RK&K and Pennoni. We have organized various food, clothes and toy drives. Personally, I have continued to volunteer at local trash and stream clean ups with Friends of the Mt Vernon Trail, Potomac Conservancy and Potomac River Keepers to help keep our community safe and clean! |
